The Tucson-based fast-food chain Eegee's, known for its sandwiches and signature frozen fruit drinks, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, as reported by ABC15. This filing comes alongside the closure of five locations, affecting a total of seventy-four employees who were offered positions at other branches, highlighting a challenging economic landscape that has persisted since the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This step is crucial to preserve the brand’s legacy and protect our team, loyal customers, and the neighborhoods we’ve served for over 50 years," Eegee’s CEO Chris Westcott stated in a release. The company, having faced years of economic headwinds, sees the move as a necessary part of its reorganization effort. Despite the bankruptcy proceedings, Eegee’s has affirmed that it will continue to honor rewards programs and gift cards.

Restaurant Business Online elaborated on Eegee's financial status, revealing both assets and liabilities ranging between $10 million and $50 million, with 100 to 199 creditors. Their report comes at a time when over 30 restaurant chains or franchisees have declared bankruptcy this year, reflecting pervasive industry pressures including rising costs and a decline in consumer spending on dining out.

Eegee's roots stretch back to 1971, establishing itself as a Tucson fixture with a variety of offerings besides its renowned frozen treats. After changing hands and leadership amidst a volatile market, such as passing ownership to 39 Point Capital and Kitchen Fund in 2018 and naming Jason Vaughn as CEO before Westcott, Eegee's had previously signaled trouble with closures in September 2023. "While it’s never easy saying goodbye to a neighborhood, we identified these restaurants because of their proximity to other locations," the company posted on a social media site X, according to Restaurant Business Online.

The current restructuring, prompted by the bankruptcy filing, will leave Eegee's with 25 locations, all situated within Arizona. The once-thriving local favorite remains steadfast in navigating through these tough financial straits, as it aims to retain its customer base and employees amidst an unpredictable and often unforgiving economic climate.
