An officer with the United States Marshals Service was shot in the leg while attempting to serve a warrant yesterday in the Dayton, Ohio, area. The incident occurred at an apartment complex in Trotwood, where, according to NBC affiliate WDTN, a suspect barricaded himself before opening fire on the officers.
U.S. Marshal Michael Black for the Southern District of Ohio confirmed that the wounded agent sustained a non-life-threatening injury. During a law enforcement attempt to serve a felony warrant, no officers discharged their weapons, as detailed in a press release obtained by WDTN News. The suspect, however, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after the authorities made their way inside the house.
A WHOI-TV interview with Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck further revealed that the man inside the apartment was declared deceased following an hours-long standoff, which included the use of concussion grenades and distraction devices by SWAT team members to enter the apartment.
Details surrounding the incident were confirmed during a press conference and made available by local media outlets, including WDTN News. Additionally, officials stated several fires were set at the location by the suspect, which Trotwood firefighters extinguished. The cause of the fires and the identity of the deceased suspect have yet to be released. An ongoing investigation is being conducted to fully ascertain the events that led to the shooting and subsequent standoff.
