The Hawai‘i Department of Health Food and Drug Branch raised a red flag with an urgent recall on Alcon Laboratories' Systane Lubricant Eye Drops, citing potential fungal contamination that might head our way—as these eyedrops were sold across the U.S., including in local Hawaiian retailers. Specifically, it's the Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF Single Vials On-the-Go in the 25-count packs, limited to lot number 10101, that's causing the concern.
Fungi in eye care products is a serious concern, as it can lead to eye infections that may harm vision or even threaten the lives of those with weakened immune systems. While no complaints have been reported yet, the Department of Health urges people to check their Systane products for the recalled lot number and stop using them if they match.
To check if your eyedrops are part of the recall, look for the lot number and expiration date on the bottom of the packaging or on each vial. If you have a recalled product, you can return it for a refund or replacement at the store where you purchased it. For questions, Hawaii residents can contact Alcon Laboratories' customer service at 1-800-241-5999, Monday to Friday, from 3:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. HST, as reported by the Governor of Hawaii's official news release.
While no health issues have been reported from this recall, it serves as a reminder that everyday products can pose unexpected risks. Stay alert for updates on this recall or any other affected products, as the DOH works with retailers to remove the tainted drops and protect public safety.
