The United States Postal Service is facing challenges at its Boston-area facilities. The audit focused on the Boston Processing and Distribution Center and three other delivery units. It found issues with delayed mail, improper scanning, and safety compliance, as reported by NBC Boston.
In September, auditors found several problems at postal facilities in Boston. At the Boston facility, they discovered "2,424 unprocessed collection letters, 69 pieces of election mail left behind on a delivery barcode sorter." They also noticed safety issues like uneven floors and unsecured trucks at docks. Similar problems were found at other locations, including Fort Point Station, Brookline Branch, and the Revere Carrier Annex. Additionally, some arrow keys used to secure mailboxes and lockers were misplaced, which could lead to mail theft, according to WCVB.
Sen. Ed Markey has called out the United States Postal Service over ongoing mail delays in the greater Boston area, citing a recent report from the United States Postal Service Inspector General. He emphasized, "Daily mail delays are a major problem in greater Boston, and today's USPS Inspector General reports confirm what we already knew," pointing to issues "including a review of facility suspensions, inadequate staffing, and consolidation of processing centers" Markey vowed to continue pressing for improvements, stating, "Management must ultimately address all these concerns and shape up or ship out." With mail delays sparking increasing complaints, officials are urging further review of United States Postal Service operations in Massachusetts, as stated by NBC Boston.
