A report from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office details a recent incident resulting in injury to multiple deputies during an arrest in Valley Springs, CA. The event unfolded last Sunday morning, where deputies encountered 52-year-old Rick Hopson of Jackson, who had apparently been tampering with security cameras and setting up a campsite on private property.
According to the official social media post by the Sheriff's Office, Hopson became uncooperative and initially attempted to flee after a deputy tried to communicate with him, forcing the officer to use a Taser. Nonetheless, the situation escalated when Hopson, armed with a large tree branch, began to aggressively advance toward the deputy.
The deputies chased Hopson for about half a mile before further confrontation in a parking area near a baseball field. Even after being struck by less-lethal impact rounds designed to subdue without causing significant injury, Hopson continued to resist, striking and injuring two deputies with the branch. The encounter ended when additional deputies managed to subdue and handcuff the suspect on the ground.
The confrontation led to two deputies being injured, with one suffering a significant injury from a blow by Hopson, while the other deputy sustained a fracture. "Two deputies sustained injuries during the struggle to apprehend suspect Hopson," as reported by the Sheriff's Office. Hopson was later charged with multiple felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon and battery on a peace officer with injury.
The injured deputies were treated and released from the hospital, and Hopson received medical attention for minor injuries before being booked into county jail. As deputies recover from this violent altercation, the discussion around the safety of law enforcement and the community they serve continues.
