A man, who was wanted for allegedly attacking a woman in her Hickory Hill home last month, shot himself following a police chase that led to an East Memphis residence. The Memphis Police Department reported that officers surrounded the location on Echles Street near Elliston yesterday afternoon, where they found the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was tracked down using a police aviation unit.
The suspect, who was first seen around 1:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Getwell, had warrants for Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Domestic Assault from the encounter on Nov. 24 on Hickory Ridge Drive, as detailed by WREG. The TACT unit, upon approaching his vehicle, found him suffering from the wound. Officers rendered aid before he was transported to Regional One in critical condition, police said.
The victim, according to Local Memphis, had told authorities that during the initial attack she was dining with her two sons when the assailant broke through her window and fired four shots, striking her once in the thigh. The man attempted to shoot her in the head, but the gun malfunctioned, allowing her the chance to flee outside before he fled the scene.
The neighborhood response was one of concern and a seeking of solace. "I was outside, and I kept seeing the helicopters and I was wondering what’s going on," a resident mentioned to FOX13. Another was quoted as saying, "It's just so much going on. I'm just staying prayed up." As of now, the investigation into the event is ongoing, and the suspect remains in critical condition.
