A Michigan resident, identified as Darrien Harris, 33, from Warren, faced arraignment on charges including assault with intent to murder, following a dispute that escalated into violence last Thursday. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced that Harris, who is forbidden from possessing firearms or ammunition, allegedly shot his wife's ex-husband as the ex was delivering a present to his son at Harris’ residence.
Harris and the victim reportedly got into a verbal altercation, which tragically turned physical when, as the ex was trying to leave, Harris allegedly fired his weapon. According to a report from MLive, the victim is expected to make a recovery. Though the shooting stemmed from a seemingly simple argument, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido underscored the gravity of the act, stating, "This was a senseless act of violence that stemmed from a verbal argument and could have been avoided."
The assault charge carries a potential life sentence, with added weight due to Harris's prior offenses. The charges also include possessions of a firearm by a prohibited person and ammunition by a prohibited person, as well as three counts of felony firearm — each of which is a two-year felony. Additionally, Harris faces enhanced penalties as a habitual second offender.
After Harris was arraigned, he was given a $750,000 cash/surety bond by District Court Chief Judge John Chmura. If released, he is ordered to wear a GPS tether and is barred from having any contact with witnesses. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office statement pointed out the schedule for the legal process, with a Probable Cause Conference set for December 12, and a Preliminary Exam on December 19, both in the early morning hours. Reflecting on the justice system’s commitment, Lucido added that persons accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty, a right protected by law.
