
Washington DC has announced changes to services for New Year’s Day, with some government operations continuing as usual.
According to a release from the Metropolitan Police Department website, all low-barrier shelters, including the New York Avenue Men’s Shelter and Pat Handy Women’s Shelter, will remain open for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Downtown Day Services Center will also be open from 8 am to 5 pm.
For those facing mental health or substance abuse crises, the DC Department of Behavioral Health will provide 24/7 crisis counseling through the number 988. The DC Stabilization Center and Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program will also be available.
The Department of Parks and Recreation will keep outdoor parks and athletic courts open, and will host Mayor Muriel Bowser’s 11th Annual FITDC Fresh Start 5k at Anacostia Park. Trash and recycling pickups for Wednesday will be moved to Thursday, while construction and non-emergency road work will pause until Thursday.
The DC Streetcar will operate from 6 am to 2 am with extended hours, while DC Public Schools and the Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed, resuming operations on Thursday. Alternative transportation information can be found at dccirculator.com/service-termination/.
