In a move that will significantly alter where West Side Cincinnati families seek maternity care, Mercy Health West Hospital is slated to discontinue its labor and delivery services, with all related procedures transitioning to Mercy Health-Anderson Hospital starting December 20. This reallocation of services arises amidst claims of insufficient staffing, according to a statement provided by Mercy Health, as reported by WLWT, whereby continuing the OB program at West Hospital was deemed "not sustainable nor in the best interests of our patients."
Dr. Betsy LeRoy, a TriHealth OB-GYN, encouraged affected families to discuss their care plans with healthcare providers quickly. In a Local 12 report, LeRoy stressed, "You want to ask them about the management of your pregnancy thus far and what the management plans are for your pregnancy going forward individualized to your pregnancy's specific needs." She underscored the importance of transferring complete medical records to ensure seamless continuation of care, particularly for high-risk pregnancies.
The decision to shutter the labor and delivery unit comes after a similar closure at Mercy Health's Fairfield location less than a year earlier. A Mercy Health spokesperson confirmed, as per FOX19, the certainty of the shutdown due to staffing shortages. However, conflicting reports have emerged, with a former Mercy Health-West Hospital nurse arguing, "Staffing is not the issue, at least not yet," before voicing concerns that efforts to sustain the birthing centers have been lacking. The nurse highlighted the staff's willingness to take additional shifts to maintain operations through the holiday season.
Mercy Health authorities have assured that an adequate physician and staff base will support the transition to Anderson Hospital, which will provide expectant mothers with high-quality care. Moreover, the hospital has committed to offering new positions within the Cincinnati market to all associates impacted by the closure. Assurance has also been provided that there are no anticipated disruptions to Anderson Hospital's labor and delivery services.
Mercy Health maintains communication with concerned parties for updates and further information.
