
A Wisconsin woman has died following an encounter with police during a welfare check in Grand Rapids. The Wisconsin Department of Justice is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding her death which occurred Sunday night, according to WSAW.
The incident began around 11:40 p.m. when a Grand Rapids police officer was called to a residence on the 7500 block of Kellner Road for a welfare check. Upon arrival, the officer encountered a woman described as "uncooperative" by WeAreGreenBay. Assistance from Wisconsin Rapids Police Department and Wood County Sheriff’s Office was requested at the scene.
Subsequent to being taken into custody by the officers, the woman became unresponsive. "The woman was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and was pronounced dead at the hospital," according to WSAW. It was noted in reports that no firearms were used during the incident.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is now at the helm of this case, taking on the responsibility of reviewing the evidence and determining the facts. In accordance with protocol, the involved law enforcement officers have been placed on administrative duty and were reported to be wearing body cameras during the incident.
