In a nod to the anglers among us, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has ushered in the early catch and release trout season that starts come January 4 and goes through May 2, 2025, allowing fishers to throw their lines in designated streams across the state. As per the rules pointed out by the DNR, all trout reeled in during this artificial lure-only timeframe should be promptly put back in the water, a practice that aligns with the agency's push for anglers to minimize the handling and reel time of the fish to promote sustainable fishing habits, details of which are outlined on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' website.
Those dreaming of a fresh trout dinner will have to wait until May 3, when the general hook and line season gets underway, and keeping catches becomes permissible, though the anglers must still adhere to the prescribed bag limits and length requirements meanwhile, anyone wanting to partake in the early season needs a 2024-2025 fishing license and an inland trout stamp, and these are up for grabs through the Go Wild portal or various sales outlets around Wisconsin until they expire on March 31.
Once April rolls in, however, it's time for the paperwork shuffle again as anglers will be required to renew their credentials with a 2025-2026 fishing license and trout stamp in order to keep casting lines, a necessary step for both being regulation compliant and contributing to the sustainable management of the state’s waterways and their aquatic residents.
By clearly demarcating the rules of the sport and setting up a system conducive to conservation, the Wisconsin DNR aims to balance the diverse interests of the fishing community with the ecological health of the region, guidance and tips for the responsible release of trout are readily available and the DNR's intention is for this practice to become second nature for those who treasure Wisconsin's aquatic life as much as the thrill of the catch.
