Bloomington's solid waste team recently hosted Giao, an environmentalist and project manager from Vietnam, as part of her participation in the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Professional Fellows Program. Giao, who works with Evergreen Labs in Vietnam, spent a month in Bloomington to gain insights into the region's sustainability practices, specifically in waste management and recycling, according to an announcement made by the City of Bloomington.
Throughout her fellowship, Giao wasted no time to rigorously learn about the City's eco-friendly endeavors, particularly focusing on pond lining techniques. She played a key role in preparing for a local recycling event. A highlight of her visit was the guided tour of an organic waste facility, a firsthand learning experience that should prove invaluable as she aspires to effectively tackle the rampant plastic pollution back home.
Immersing herself in the local culture, Giao took the time to explore Bloomington and the neighboring areas, biking around and visiting Minneapolis. "This has been an amazing opportunity," she told the City of Bloomington's website. Her admiration for Minnesota's natural water treatment methods was such that she expressed her intention to promote similar practices in Vietnam.
Reflecting on her experience, Giao shared her intentions to apply what she's learned back in Vietnam to improve local environmental initiatives. With newfound strategies and understanding of community involvement in waste management under her belt, Giao appears poised to significantly enhance her contribution to her country's battle against environmental degradation. "I've gained new knowledge, built relationships and will take what I've learned back to help address environmental issues in Vietnam," she affirmed, indicating a fruitful exchange of ideas across continents.
