New Year's Day at Coney Island came with its traditional icy splash as an estimated 4,000 brave souls ventured into the frigid Atlantic. With temperatures of the ocean water hovering just under 40 degrees, the participants marked their fresh starts with the 122nd annual Polar Bear plunge, as per reports from NY1. Registering for the event was free, however, those who attended were encouraged to donate, with the funds raised going to nonprofits across Coney Island.
According to ABC7NY, the frosty dip not only provides a jolt of adrenaline but also fosters community spirit. Participant Dawn Clarity emphasized the plunge's unifying effect, stating, "It brings people together," while Cindy Vourderis of the Alliance for Coney Island highlighted the event’s spirit, saying, "Our Polar Bear Plunge has been a beloved tradition for over a century, and there's truly no better way to kick off the New Year." Indeed, it wasn't just locals who gathered; plungers from around the world converged on the storied beach to embody the New Year’s Day spirit.
The sentiments shared by participants ranged from those embracing the 'crazy' to others seeking rejuvenation for the new year ahead. "I’m a little bit crazy but thats ok," Valerie Greco of Staten Island told NY1, echoing a sentiment shared by participant Dylan Fried: "I first did this in 2017, [...] I did it again last year, now this year, and probably doing it again next year. I don’t care how crazy that makes me sound." Besides the thrill, regulars like Carlos Planas cherish the youthful joy the event brings, "I am 60 years old, but when I jump in that water I feel like I am ten years old," he shared.
The plunge also plays a role in charitable efforts, helping to raise funds for a variety of local organizations, including the Coney Island YMCA, the New York Aquarium, and the Alliance for Coney Island. This aspect brings a layer of community support and engagement to the frosty fun. Yesteryear's sentimentality is washed away with the ocean's chill, as participant Nysheika Gilchrist aptly summarized, "I feel revived. Refreshed. New Year. New beginnings, blessings, I’m here," as reported by NY1.
