Arizona State Representative Jeff Weninger is taking a swing at Chase Field's future with proposed legislation aimed at sprucing up the ballpark sans new taxes to the state's residents. Weninger, who helms the House Commerce Committee, presented HB2704 which sketches out a funding game plan that hinges on recapturing existing sales and income taxes generated by Chase Field and the Diamondbacks. The strategy mirrors that of the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority, responsible for the financial upkeep of State Farm Stadium, but notably skips out on leveraging additional charges such as the car rental surcharge and hotel bed tax.
With the expiration of the Diamondbacks' lease at Chase Field drawing near in 2027, both the franchise and fans are facing the possibility of the team relocating—something Weninger and his team are working hard to avoid, especially following the Coyotes' departure last year, according to the Arizona State Legislature. The main goal of HB2704 is to generate a steady cash flow for enhancements to Chase Field, ensuring that the Diamondbacks stay and the stadium remains a top-tier destination for fans seeking modern amenities and well-functioning infrastructure.
The plan isn't just a solo home run by the state either, as the Diamondbacks organization itself is prepared to lay down a considerable chunk of change toward the ballpark's renovation project. Team President, CEO, and General Partner Derrick Hall commented on the team's readiness to invest, highlighting a commitment to sustaining the venue as one of the premier spots in baseball, "We are thrilled with all of the momentum and positivity surrounding this legislation," Hall expressed. "This solution avoids any new taxes and demonstrates civic pride for a franchise that cherishes its role in creating jobs, impacting the economy, bettering the community, and providing an exciting product," his sentiment capturing a blend of anticipated success and local pride, as reported by AZLEG.
The Diamondbacks' tenure at Chase Field has been a key feature of Arizona's sports landscape, attracting millions and cultivating countless memories. Representative Weninger acknowledged this heritage and the wide interest in keeping it alive, "The Arizona Diamondbacks are a pillar of our community, and Chase Field has been a cornerstone of Arizona’s sports and entertainment scene for decades, welcoming millions of fans and creating unforgettable memories," he noted, casting HB2704 as the crucial stride towards cementing the stadium's legacy for future generations, as per a report by AZLEG. Meanwhile, Weninger, a Republican from Legislative District 13, is working to gain support for the bill in the legislature, aiming to secure a win for Arizona's sports community.
