The Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) is making strides to equip foster youth with an essential adult skill – driving. The recently launched Youth Driver Education Program aims to do more than just hand over the keys, it's an educational initiative, teaching the undulations of the road and the responsibilities that come with a set of wheels. "We are committed to preparing youth in care to successfully transition to adulthood," Joie Hudson, DCS's Permanency and Youth Services Coordinator, told DCS. This program is set to provide another avenue for these young adults to forge a productive future post-foster care.
The program provides a comprehensive pathway for foster youth to obtain their driver's licenses. It includes mandatory training, hands-on driving practice, and classroom preparation for the permit test, meeting Arizona Department of Transportation requirements. Upon completion, participants receive a state-issued driver’s license. So far, around 500 foster youth have been introduced to this opportunity, giving them the tools to navigate the road to independence, as per the Arizona Department of Child Safety.
Over the past summer, DCS took their support a gear higher by providing financial aid to 50 young adults in the extended foster care program to help pay off their car loans and other related expenses. With an extra grant from the John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood, they've made hefty strides toward reducing the financial burdens that often come with vehicle ownership. "Our goal is to help these youth navigate the transition to adulthood," Barbara Guillen, DCS's Permanency and Youth Services Administrator, said in a statement.
Funding from the Chafee grant has played a vital role in alleviating car debt and covering related expenses for young adults, providing them with greater financial freedom as they work toward building their futures. Eligible applicants had to be at least 18 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and be enrolled in the Department’s extended foster care program.
