After nearly four decades of service, Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Director Kent Kilpatrick has announced he will step down on April 1. Kilpatrick began his career in 1987 as an Outdoor Recreation Manager and dedicated himself to improving the community's recreational offerings, according to the Athens-Clarke County.
Acting Manager Niki Jones praised Kent Kilpatrick’s nearly four-decade dedication to the community, saying, "Kent’s dedication to serving this community’s residents and visitors of all ages and abilities for nearly four decades is extraordinary." During his 37 years with the department and as Leisure Services Director, Kilpatrick led the department to earn 42 awards, including three Agency of the Year honors. Key achievements include the Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek, the creation of "Teen Tech Labs," and expanding the county's trail system, as reported by the Athens-Clarke County.
Kilpatrick, who received the 2021 Ray Hammond Leadership Award for his service, is retiring after years of leadership at the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department. He expressed gratitude for the chance to serve, saying, "It has been an honor to serve this community and leave a legacy of parks, programs, and memories that will benefit generations to come." A national search for his replacement is underway, while the department continues its mission to enhance community health and livability.
