As temperatures dip and winter settles over Atlanta, the city is taking action to protect its most vulnerable citizens from the cold. The City of Atlanta has announced the opening of a warming center at the Central Park Recreation Center, located at 400 Merritts Ave. NE. The center will provide refuge for those in need starting today, in response to anticipated colder temperatures.
The warming center is set to quickly open at 8:00 p.m. today, and will remain operational until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. The schedule is set to unsurprisingly repeat at the same time on January 2 through to January 5, with extended hours over the weekend. As reported by the City of Atlanta's official news release, the Old Adamsville Recreation Center will also function as an overflow site, ensuring that additional space is available at 3404 Delmar Ln NW.
For those requiring transportation to the warming center, Fulton County has committed to providing rides from the Gateway Center commencing at 8:00 p.m. nightly. The return journey will be arranged upon the center's deactivation each morning. These plans are in place to ensure a smooth and accessible transition for individuals seeking warmth and safety from the winter conditions.
City officials have also noted that activation times for the warming center may likely change depending on the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service. The community is urged to stay informed on the most recent updates to take full advantage of the services provided.
