Atlanta has seen notable progress in reducing crime in 2024, with a significant decrease in homicides and vehicle thefts. According to FOX5 Atlanta, homicides dropped by 8%, and vehicle thefts were down 29%. "Crime is down in Atlanta, particularly, homicides are down once again this year," said Mayor Andre Dickens. Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said in a statement, "The number one reduced area of crime in our city last year was vehicle theft, 29% down over the previous year. If you look at robberies, robberies were down 15%. Persons shot in our city is down 7%."
The decrease in crime is also attributed to city programs like "Year of the Youth," which includes Midnight Basketball to provide young people with positive opportunities, as mentioned in a report by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Atlanta Public Safety Training Center has further equipped police to handle violent incidents. Additionally, technology, such as a camera system with over 20,000 units, has helped law enforcement solve crimes more effectively.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis highlighted the human impact of the crime reduction, noting 44 fewer deaths compared to the previous year. DA Willis’s office boasts a 90% conviction rate, reflecting the collaboration between law enforcement and her office to maintain public safety, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
