The extent of the tragedy saw three people transported to hospitals by Austin-Travis County EMS, and another person, who sustained minor injuries chose the route of self-transportation to seek medical attention, according to KXAN reports; additionally, three children were among those taken for "minor, non-life-threatening complaints", while one adult received treatment on the scene. AFD's Assistant Chief Tom Vocke emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors which played a critical role in alerting residents, allowing them to evacuate safely, this information was highlighted by the same outlet.
While the exact cause of the fire is still being probed, AFD found significant charring between floors hinting at an electrical failure as the likely culprit. The department believes the flames originated from a vacant unit in the complex, leading to fire damage in four units, with an additional twelve suffering from smoke and water damage. The loss inflicted upon the structure is estimated to be around $200,000, as reported by KXAN.
As dusk fell, and the city prepared for New Year's festivities, the harsh daylight reflected on the charred remains of what once was a sanctuary for many, now standing as a grim reminder of the night's chaos, with over 20 individuals grappling with the abrupt loss of their homes according to coverage by CBS Austin. In the face of this tragedy, the Austin Police Department Victim Services alongside the Central Texas Red Cross stepped in to lend support to those displaced ensuring that the victims had resources and aid at their disposal as articulated by both news outlets.
