Barrow County Sets Ambitious Goal for Zero Road Fatalities by 2050 with New Safety Action PlanSource: Barrow County

Barrow County is working to reduce traffic fatalities with a new safety action plan. The plan, developed with input from Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A), aligns with the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides funding for transportation safety projects. This effort aims to make local roads safer and reduce traffic-related deaths, according to the Barrow County.

The Barrow County Board of Commissioners is focusing on improving road safety for the future. "This plan gives us a snapshot of the areas around Barrow County that are most in need of safety improvements. Our goal is to have zero roadway fatalities by 2050," said Pat Graham, Chairman of the Board. The county plans to update this strategy every three to five years to adjust for changes in traffic patterns and demographics.

Barrow County's road safety plan began with a year of meetings with residents and stakeholders in 2024. The feedback led to a draft plan, which was approved by the Board of Commissioners. Now in the implementation phase, the plan is designed to adapt as needed. "As with any big-picture plans, we always have to be flexible. This plan is no different," said Graham, emphasizing its ability to evolve to achieve the goal of zero fatalities.
