Last Saturday, a police cadet in Battle Creek disarmed a 5-year-old holding a loaded handgun while serving a subpoena. The cadet was first met by the child with a large kitchen knife, and when asked for an adult, the child returned with the firearm, which the cadet safely removed, as reported by WOODTV.
After road patrol officers arrived, two men and a woman were detained for questioning. Investigations revealed poor living conditions at the residence, resulting in five children, aged 8 years to 6 months, being placed under Child Protective Services' care. One child was hospitalized and later transferred to a Kalamazoo hospital due to health concerns, according to WZZM 13.
The woman's home in Battle Creek was condemned due to poor conditions, and the police are pursuing weapons and neglect charges. Her father spoke about her past as a single mother and previous instances of domestic abuse, with a man arrested on January 12 in connection with a domestic violence case. He is now focused on obtaining custody of his grandchildren, stating, "I love my daughter, I love my grandkids, I want to see everyone back together as a family, that’s all," as stated by FOX 17 and WOODTV.
