Hillsborough County is opening cold weather shelters from today through Thursday for homeless individuals and those in inadequate housing. The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures that may drop to or below 40 degrees, including wind chill, making these shelters essential for those without warmth.

According to Hillsborough County website, the county expects high demand for shelters and encourages residents to consider staying with friends or family due to limited space. Shelters will process arrivals from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, or until they reach capacity. The following locations will be open: Church of God of Prophecy Hyde Park, Hyde Park United Methodist Church (preferred media location), Tampa Bay Mission of Hope, and Amazing Love Ministries.

These shelters are for adults only, but families with children may receive limited accommodations. Metropolitan Ministries is offering single-night motel vouchers to some families on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required by calling (813) 209-1176 before 5 p.m. today.

The shelters are accepting donations of hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and toiletries. These items are needed to help provide warmth and comfort to those in need.
