Bill Borchert, a long-time Slidell city councilman, is poised to step into the role of mayor following Greg Cromer's resignation earlier this month. Cromer, who left to take up a new role with the State of Louisiana, will be replaced by Borchert at a public oath ceremony scheduled for January 20th at Slidell City Hall. As reported by MySlidell.com, the event will mark the beginning of Borchert's tenure until a special election in October.
According to the city's charter, Borchert, who garnered the most votes for council-at-large in the previous election, will serve as an interim mayor. His inauguration coincides with nearly one and a half years remaining in Mayor Cromer's term. Borchert expressed his enthusiasm for his new role and gratitude towards Cromer's legacy in Slidell, stating, "It has been an honor to serve the people of Slidell as a councilman for the last 16 years, and I look forward to continuing to serve the great citizens of Slidell as mayor," in a statement obtained by MySlidell.com.
Borchert's long-standing commitment to the community extends beyond his 16-year stint on the city council. He has been a part of Slidell's fabric for over five decades and has acted as the de facto mayor in Cromer's absence, as dictated by the city charter. An engineer by training, Borchert brings an analytical perspective to the challenges faced by the city, his problem-solving skills honed through years of public service. He and his wife Laura, an attorney practicing in Slidell, are well-established figures in the city.
Residents of Slidell are encouraged to witness the transition of power and show their support for Borchert at the upcoming ceremony. Borchert's assumption of office hopes to maintain the momentum of Cromer's efforts and steer Slidell toward continued prosperity. "I am excited about continuing the great things that Mayor Cromer has accomplished for the City of Slidell over the last six and a half years." Borchert told MySlidell.com. With a special election on the horizon, Borchert's interim term is a prelude to the city's next chapter under potentially new leadership.
