In a bipartisan move to back those who serve and protect, Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Kevin Cramer (R-ND) have introduced the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act. The legislation is designed to broaden federal support for families of firefighters and other first responders who fall into service-related cancers or become permanently disabled because of them. As noted in a recent announcement, firefighters are currently only eligible for support from the Public Safety Officer Benefits (PSOB) program for immediate physical injuries or fatalities related to heart attacks, strokes, mental health, or certain 9/11-specific illnesses.
Speaking about his connection to public safety, Senator Kelly shared, "As the son of two police officers, I know the value of public safety officers in our communities." He emphasized the necessity of assuring familial support when sacrifices are made because of service-related cancers. Meanwhile, the threats facing firefighters are brought to light by the frequent California wildfires, with Senator Klobuchar stating, "Our firefighters put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, often exposing themselves to carcinogens that can have lethal long-term effects," as per the Senator's Office. Her collaboration with Senator Cramer intends to make sure firefighters get the recognition and backing they are due.
Additional components of the PSOB, such as the Public Safety Officers’ Educational Assistance (PSOEA) program, which aims to offer higher-education assistance to children and spouses of fallen or disabled public safety officers, are being pushed to extend by Senator Kelly. Not alone, Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) highlighted the importance of this duty, given the grave sacrifices made during emergencies such as the Southern California wildfires, "Firefighters and first responders put their lives on the line without a second thought to protect California communities," as reported by the Senator's Office. Advocacy of the proposed measures has drawn support from influential associations like the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF).
