Nadica Ristivojevic, former owner of Birmingham Bridal in Michigan, has been sentenced to 35 days in jail after pleading no contest to three counts of larceny by conversion involving charges of defrauding customers. Under the terms of the plea, additional charges were dismissed, and Ristivojevic has already paid the ordered restitution of $31,310, CBS News Detroit reports.
A shutdown store and shattered dreams were the remnants of hope for many brides left in despair as Ristivojevic's schemes came to light, the business owner had been accused of not delivering on custom gowns and accessories despite accepting thousands of dollars from clients, with customers being forced to rush for alternatives, and according to Audacy, investigations suggest the total fraud amounted to $40,000 to $50,000.
In the unfolding of events, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald highlighted the non-monetary toll on the victims, saying, "The defendant robbed these victims of tens of thousands of dollars, but the stress, anxiety, and inconvenience she caused when she committed these crimes goes far beyond money," as per the information shared with Audacy.
Ristivojevic's attorney, John Freeman, conveyed his client's remorse stating, "She is remorseful and regrets what happened. Ms. Ristivojevic looks forward to putting this behind her and moving on with her life," as he shared with The Detroit News; the conviction also serves as a reminder of the legal risks business owners face, as the same week saw a Michigan couple and a west Michigan man sentenced for identity theft and wire fraud respectively. Investigations further uncovered a troubling gambling habit whereby Ristivojevic hoped to recoup funds for her customers which came to the fore when police delved into the bridal store's abrupt closure in June 2023.
