In what's being heralded as a bright moment for the arts in the Buckeye State, BLINK Cincinnati has snagged the Irma Lazarus Award, one of the top honors bestowed by the Ohio Governor's Awards for the Arts. The festival, noted for transforming Greater Cincinnati with vibrant installations, pulled in millions of spectators and, with no less than modesty, a staggering $126 million in economic activity last year.
This accolade highlights the influential role that events like BLINK play in shaping public arts support. According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, the Irma Lazarus Award is dedicated to those "who have helped shape public support for the arts through their work as advocates and have brought national and international recognition to Ohio through sustained dedication to artistic excellence." The honor pays tribute to its namesake, the late arts patron and advocate who helmed the Ohio Arts Council board.
Hosted last October across scenic locales like Over-the-Rhine and Downtown Cincinnati, Newport, and Covington, BLINK featured a grand display of over 80 installations and 15 new permanent murals that are destined to leave a lasting impression on Over-the-Rhine's aesthetic. "The country's largest public art event," as Local12 reports, drew in tourists by the droves, competing against attractions you'd normally tip your hats to.
Joining BLINK in the acknowledgment is Padma Chebrolu, another Cincinnati legend in her own right, who snagged an arts education award. Through her Cultural Centre of India, she's drawing eyes to the state with her work in Indian classical dance and arts education. The Governor's Awards, a stable tradition since 1971, crowned nine recipients this year for their exceptional contributions, as outlined on the pages of FOX19.
The accolades will be formally presented during a ceremony on May 28, noted for both the prestige of the awards and the original artwork gifted to recipients. Ohioan painter Tara Yarzand from Sylvania is the artist behind this year's unique awards, ready to add a touch of her vision to the already vibrant canvas of BLINK's success.
