Bloomington streets near schools are now zones of heightened caution. As reported by the City of Bloomington's official website, speed limits have been dropped to 25 miles per hour on local streets, and even further to 20 mph around several schools, since the summer of 2024. The decrease comes as part of a citywide push to improve safety for students making their way to and from school.
Starting in October 2024, Kennedy High School, Olsen Middle and Elementary Schools, Poplar Bridge Elementary School, and Oak Grove Middle and Elementary Schools have all seen their surrounding streets' speed limits drop when yellow beacons flash. Slow driving is a must during the morning and afternoon rush when students are walking, though it was not specified the exact times when the beacons are activated.
Those breezing through without a glance at their speedometers will need to pay closer attention. The promise of more school zone speed limit enforcement is on the horizon for over 20 public and private schools throughout Bloomington. This gradual rollout suggests that the city is taking a measured, yet firm approach to controlling traffic flow and reducing the risk of accidents near educational institutions.
Driving near schools always demands extra vigilance. In line with the City's safety efforts, "Drivers should slow down and pay extra attention anytime they are near schools," stated Bloomington's city page. As these zones expand, residents commuting through the areas can anticipate needing to budget a few extra minutes into their morning routines.
