
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, in partnership with Boston University, will host a commemorative event for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday at noon. The program, held at Boston University's Metcalf Hall, will honor his legacy and be live-streamed and broadcast on local TV channels, according to the City of Boston.
Mayor Wu spoke about Dr. King’s legacy, saying, "As we reflect on Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to equity, justice, and unity," and emphasized Boston's special connection to him. She added, "Boston lifts up our special connection to Dr. King and the tangible impact he left here with a legacy we continue to strive for." The partnership with Boston University aims to honor his work and reaffirm the city's dedication to creating a community where, "His dreams and values set the standard for building a city where every voice is heard and every community is empowered," as stated by the City of Boston.
The 2025 celebration in Boston will include Dr. Melissa L. Gilliam, President of Boston University, who will say, "Dr. King championed communities rooted in equity and belonging." Cole Arthur Riley, bestselling author and creator of Black Liturgies, will give a keynote, and there will be musical performances and readings by Boston residents and students. Gilliam also stated, "We are honored to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy with the City of Boston," and acknowledged the university’s collaboration with Mayor Wu’s office to uphold King’s values. The event continues Boston’s tradition of honoring Dr. King’s message, as reported by the City of Boston.
