A teenager's flirtation with danger took a perilous turn yesterday evening as he fell from a moving subway car while engaging in the life-threatening activity known as subway surfing in the Bronx, police said. According to Daily News, the 15-year-old male lost his balance and fell onto the tracks between Gun Hill Road and Pelham Parkway around 5:50 p.m., sustaining a head injury in the process. "He’s lucky to be alive," a police source disclosed to the publication, noting that emergency personnel had to enter the tunnel to retrieve the young individual. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital and remained "conscious and alert," the source added.
Subway surfing, which involves recklessly riding on top of or clinging to the side of a train, continues to challenge local law enforcement. In response to a spike in such incidents, the NYPD rolled out a drone initiative in 2023. These remote-controlled eyes in the sky focus particularly on after-school hours, policing the J, M, Z, and 7 subway lines, as detailed by Daily News. The drones are operational from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., aiding officers on the ground in spotting and deterring potential subway surfers.
Further information from FOX 5 New York confirms that the incident occurred just before 6 p.m. at the subway station on East Gun Hill Road. The victim, whose age was estimated to be between 15-18, was transported to an hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with head injuries.
The perilous consequences of subway surfing are not to be underestimated. Last year alone, six people succumbed to the fatal grip of such stunts.
