Brooklyn has been witnessing an uptick in brazen crimes, the NYPD is currently on the lookout for a male suspect responsible for a spate of armed carjackings in Sheepshead Bay. As reported by ABC7 New York, the incidents which took place yesterday evening near East 17th Street and Avenue R, began with an altercation over money leading to the suspect striking a 45-year-old male victim with a firearm. The series of events continued with a purse snatching from a 70-year-old woman and concluded with an attempted car theft of a 2023 Hyundai Sonata after the suspect crashed a stolen black Mercedes.
Wearing a ski mask and all black clothing, the suspect, described as being in his 20s with long hair and a medium build, led the police in a chase driving the wrong way on Avenue R and crashing into several vehicles. While no injuries from the collisions have been reported, the harm inflicted on the community's sense of security ripples outwardly. With no arrests made to this time, the concern among Brooklynites grows.
Adding to the borough's woes, a separate criminal enterprise saw a thief infiltrate a bodega in a novel heist. As PIX11 detailed, the suspect gained entry by cutting a hole into the roof of a 9th Street bodega on November 1. In a move that seems ripped from a heist movie, the suspect made away with $900 from a cash register, a still undetermined amount of cash from an ATM, and various merchandise before escaping through the same rooftop aperture.
Last spotted boarding a Manhattan-bound D train at the 4th Avenue-9th Street subway station, the rooftop burglar left behind a narrative that feels misplaced, similar to finding a hole in the roof of a narrative itself. Both cases have stirred the NYPD into increased vigilance, with investigations ongoing and a call to citizens to report any information that may lead to an arrest.
