In a recent post, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office acknowledged the contributions of its volunteer units throughout 2024. As the county moved into the new year, 31 members dedicated their time to public service, with the number increasing to 32 by the end of the year, despite some members retiring. The Volunteer Unit and Volunteer Search and Rescue Team collectively logged 16,188.5 hours supporting public safety and emergency response.
The numbers reflect the dedication of these citizen volunteers, whose roles include administrative support, event supervision, traffic management, education, and patrol duties. According to a social media post from the Sheriff’s Office, this level of commitment enables services that might otherwise be difficult to provide. In 2023, the volunteers exceeded the 12,000-hour total from 2022, reaching 12,955.5 hours worked.
Efficiency and readiness are key elements of a successful volunteer operation, and the Sheriff’s Office's subdivision statistics provide a detailed overview of this community effort. The Volunteer Unit participated in 48 events, patrolled for 3,304 hours, and staffed substations for 622 days. Their contributions were reflected both in time and mileage, with 62,442 miles driven on patrol and 27,077 miles on personal vehicles.
The Volunteer Search and Rescue Team (CCSAR), with five decades of service, conducted nine callouts for search and rescue missions. Specializing in wilderness medical emergencies, locating missing persons, and providing mutual aid during civil emergencies, CCSAR plays a key role in these efforts. The team collectively accumulated 3,233 hours for meetings, searches, training, and equipment maintenance, as per the official report.
To the volunteers who crafted their 2024 into a timeline of service, the Sheriff’s Office extends its profound thanks: "Your commitment to our community has significantly impacted the safety and well-being of the citizens we serve. Thank you for the hard work and professionalism you bring. We are proud to have you as part of our team."
