The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Stockton division has issued a warning about a new phone scam targeting families. Scammers posing as "AMBER Alert representatives" are calling parents, falsely claiming to "register" their children in the emergency system for abducted children.
The craft of these scammers involves soliciting personal information, including asking families to meet at their homes, while parading as a safety measure for their children. Highlighting the risks associated with these fraudulent activities, a recent CHP - Stockton Facebook post, reminds community members that "This is NOT how the AMBER Alert system works!" intending to educate the public on the proper protocols. "The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is the only agency authorized to activate AMBER Alerts—no registration is required," they stated firmly in their commitment to preserve the integrity of the crucial alert system.
The CHP urges people to stay cautious about privacy, especially with unsolicited calls. Residents should avoid sharing personal information or responding to unknown callers, and report any suspicious incidents to local law enforcement to help prevent further scams and catch the perpetrators.
