In an update likely to delight commuters and environmentalists alike, Caltrain has reported a significant uptick in riders since introducing their electric service. According to Caltrain's latest news release, the last three months of 2024 saw a 41% increase in ridership compared to the same period in 2023, with numbers showing particular strength on Sundays, where they've effectively doubled.
Caltrain, the Peninsula's primary rail line, experienced a momentary spike and consistent growth across the board. December 2024 marked a significant milestone, with over half a million passengers choosing the rail line, outstripping December 2023's figures by 41%. Despite a winter that usually keeps commuters away, the numbers have been persistently climbing since the launch of the electric service in September. Weekday averages reached over 24,000 passengers, a 39% jump from last December, while weekends witnessed even more pronounced increases, Saturdays up by 62% and Sundays an astonishing 85%, echoing nearly pre-pandemic ridership levels.
Michelle Bouchard, Caltrain’s Executive Director, emphasized the transformative impact of electrification. "Electric service is continuing to deliver on its promise," she said as per Caltrain's newsroom. The executive highlighted benefits such as reduced traffic congestion, faster service, and modern amenities, including Wi-Fi and accessible outlets, a marked upgrade from the previously diesel-dominated operation.
