Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has officially inaugurated its 13th president, Greg Elzinga. The Friday ceremony marked a new era for the university which is quickly approaching its 150th anniversary. Elzinga, a first-generation graduate and alumnus of the institution, brings to the role a deep history of global faith-based engagement. He expressed his vision for a "new chapter filled with hope, growth, and the transformative power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ," a statement obtained by FOX17.
In his address, Elzinga conveyed his profound gratitude, both for divine providence and for those who have influenced his personal journey, he told WOODTV. Previously having rose through the ranks to vice president for advancement at Calvin, his journey to presidency, forged in unexpected circumstances, evidences his adaptability and dedicated service. The ceremony signifies a commitment to navigate the institution through the tumultuous landscape of higher education, emphasizing strategic growth and diversity.
Prior to the official inauguration, Elzinga received poignant messages from students of the Calvin Prison Initiative at Handlon Correctional Facility, as reported by calvin.edu. The students, representing various cohorts within the program, offered words of charge and encouragement. Each reflected a shared ambition to embody the Christian call to servanthood and communal excellence.
Elzinga's response to the Handlon community demonstrated his connection to his broader audience and the university's mission. "Every time I come here it is one of the most inspiring parts of my experience," he said, noting his resolve that "our world needs more men and women that are educated and equipped to live, work, and serve as Christ's agents of renewal the way you are demonstrating that day in and day out here at Handlon." Calder University, guided by President Elzinga's leadership, clearly aims to not just prepare students for their careers, but also, for a life steeped in communal and spiritual contribution, as reported by calvin.edu.
