The National Weather Service (NWS) in Charlotte has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Friday morning through Saturday morning. Residents can expect fair weather today with a high of 39 degrees, but snow and sleet are forecast to impact the region on Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, the watch covers parts of Northeast Georgia, the Piedmont, Western North Carolina, and Upstate South Carolina. The National Weather Service predicts snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches along and north of the I-40 corridor. The greater Charlotte area may see 1 to 2 inches of mixed snow and ice.
Travel could be hazardous, and snow and ice may cause scattered power outages as they weigh down tree limbs and power lines. "The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes," the National Weather Service warns.
Temperatures are expected to drop to around 21 degrees tonight, with calm winds, ahead of the wintry weather, as per the National Weather Service. Residents should prepare for the incoming storm by staying informed through NOAA Weather Radio or other weather sources.
