Nearly 90 firefighters were quick to respond and extinguish a massive fire at a local storage unit facility in southwest Charlotte, which engulfed a block of storage units in flames yesterday afternoon. The incident, which occurred on South Tryon Street near Westinghouse Boulevard, drew a three-alarm response from the Charlotte Fire Department, as reported by QC News. Multiple calls about heavy smoke and visible flames began coming in at roughly 3:48 p.m., with the first engine confirming a working fire on arrival.
The blaze was aggressive, prompting incident commanders to escalate the response as the fire spread rapidly through multiple storage units. A second and then a third alarm were called at ten-minute intervals to marshal resources capable of quelling the inferno. According to a WBTV report, fire officials declared the fire under control shortly before 5 p.m., about an hour after crews arrived on the scene. Remarkably, "there were no injuries to civilians or firefighters."
Drone footage released by the Charlotte Fire Department showed the aftermath of the fire, giving a unique perspective on the damage sustained by the facility. The released video can be watched in the video player included in the WBTV coverage. Following the blaze, investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire. However, they have estimated the damages to be approximately $250,000, as indicated by officials in a statement published by WBTV.
The incident did not result in any casualties, a fact underscored by officials and echoed in coverage from local news outlets like WCNC, which detailed timely control of fire in under an hour by the team of firefighters. The exact number of affected units remains undetermined as of the latest updates, but the investigation into the fire continues, with updates pending on the total property loss incurred during the incident.
