Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit is in the midst of a death investigation following an incident in the Freedom Division area. The investigation is centered around the 11200 block of Windy Grove Road after a series of events unfolded in the early hours today, according to a release from the CMPD.
The situation escalated when officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the 9500 block of Walkers Ferry Road around 12:30 a.m. The driver fled instead of complying, leading to a brief sequence of events. Officers later found the vehicle abandoned a short distance away in the Freedom Division on Windy Grove Road. During their investigation, they heard cries for help coming from Lake Wylie.
Police responded to the calls for help, rescuing a male subject from the lake and beginning emergency life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital, according to MEDIC. The cause of death is pending official determination following further investigation.
In the course of the rescue operation, two officers sustained injuries that required medical attention. After the necessary treatment, both have been released from the hospital. Their current conditions are unknown, as the department has not provided additional details at this time.
