A tragic incident on a dreary Charlotte morning has left a pedestrian dead after being struck by a vehicle. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported that 48-year-old Petrina Ann Williams was hit yesterday morning, in north Charlotte, and succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. The collision occurred around 6:50 a.m. in the 4500 block of Reagan Drive, amid challenging weather conditions that included darkness and rain. According to QC News, Williams was found lying on the ground and transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
CMPD identified the driver of the white 2018 Ford Transit which collided with Williams as 20-year-old Eliceo Zunun Aguilar. The vehicle bore evidence of the incident with damage noted to its windshield, and front right. Aguilar stayed at the scene following the accident, as reported by WSOC-TV. Authorities have revealed that speed and impairment are not considered contributing factors in the crash.
The circumstances of the incident highlight common pedestrian safety issues. Police noted that Williams was crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk and was dressed in obscure, dim clothing under low visibility conditions—a recipe for disaster on urban thoroughfares. Officials have not yet released the results of Williams’ toxicology report and her next of kin have been notified. This information was provided by WBTV.
The investigation into this fatal collision continues, and CMPD is urging anyone with information to come forward to help piece together the events leading up to Williams' tragic death. Detective Mercedes has been assigned the case, and witnesses or those with pertinent details are encouraged to contact her directly or to reach out to Crime Stoppers. "This is an active investigation," CMPD added, confirming to the public that the quest for a comprehensive understanding of the incident is ongoing. The invitation for community assistance was echoed by WSOC-TV in their coverage of the fatal event.
