The Cleveland television community is mourning the loss of one of its most familiar and beloved figures, as "Big Chuck" Schodowski has passed away at the age of 90. Known for his humorous late-night shows on WJW Channel 8, Schodowski's death was confirmed in a report from WKYC News, while tributes have begun to flow on social media.
An integral figure in Cleveland's television history, Schodowski began his journey into the industry after deciding to change careers, famously driving past a TV station and thinking it might be fun to work as a cameraman. He would eventually quickly go on to become an engineer, a producer, and a co-host of iconic shows that entertained generations. Touching on his early aspirations, Schodowski once shared in an interview with the Akron Beacon Journal, "When I was a kid, I was very shy," he said. "I always wanted to be in a school play but I could never, ever get onstage."
Famed for his partnership with Bob Wells, aka Hoolihan, the duo's "Hoolihan and Big Chuck Show" began in December 1966 and became a staple of late-night TV in Cleveland, running until 1979. Following Hoolihan's departure, Schodowski teamed up with John "Lil' John" Rinaldi to form the "Big Chuck & Lil' John Show," which continued to captivate viewers. His comedic take on hosting, featuring skits and parodies alongside horror flicks and B movies, made "Big Chuck" a household name. According to Cleveland.com, in a 2016 interview with The Plain Dealer, Schodowski joked about almost being recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for his longstanding tenure at one station, WJW Channel 8, but dismissed the effort, saying, "Ah, but it was too much of a hassle."
In celebration of his storied career, Schodowski authored a book in 2013 titled "Big Chuck! My favorite stories from 47 years on Cleveland TV," reflecting on his extensive experience in local television. His impact on Cleveland and the larger television community is remembered fondly through his myriad of contributions and his distinctive, infectious laugh. Sherry Rinaldi, Lil' John's wife, paid tribute to Schodowski in a Facebook post, describing him as "a wonderful talented man" whose influence was pivotal for her family's "wonderful opportunities." She announced his passing saying, "So sad to say Big Chuck from the Big Chuck and Lil John show passed away last night," as reported by WKYC.
