In the face of the frigid temperatures forecast for the holiday weekend, Commerce City is stepping up to provide a temporary respite from the cold. The city's Eagle Pointe Recreation Center, located at 6060 Parkway Dr., is transforming into an emergency warming shelter to assist those in need. According to the City of Commerce City, Eagle Pointe will open its doors for the initiative starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, and will continue to provide shelter until the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 21.
While the recreation center will maintain its standard recreational services during the weekend, owing to the severe cold, both Eagle Pointe and Bison Ridge recreation centers will observe a delay in opening. With a start time of 10 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday, the doors will remain open for anyone looking to escape the chill or engage in indoor activities. And, following the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, the facilities are set to resume at a postponed time of 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
For those opting to stay overnight at the Eagle Pointe warming shelter, the community rooms will transform from daytime seating to accommodating cots. A strict entry policy is in place, necessitating all overnight guests to arrive before 10 p.m., with no re-entry permitted after exiting until 8 a.m. the next day. Light refreshments will be on offer to provide some comfort, as per the City of Commerce City
It's important to note that the shelter comes with certain regulations. The nighttime capacity is capped at 30 occupants, and should the center reach this limit, additional users will be directed elsewhere. Following the laid out guidelines, personal belongings are limited to what one can carry in a backpack or an equivalent bag, and pets are unfortunately not welcomed inside the facility. Those seeking a roof in the company of their animal companions should call ahead at 303-289-3760 to explore possible alternatives, as stated by the City of Commerce City.
