Following a contentious Cumberland County Board of Education meeting, it was decided in a narrow 5-4 vote that the director of schools, William Stepp, will not have his contract renewed once it expires. The debate within the community, and the split board, signals a district grappling with issues of leadership and continuity, as per WVLT.
Despite some community support that included testimonials that Stepp positively impacted public perception and the promotion of local schools, the board's decision reflects a deeper concern. According to WBIR, issues arose regarding Stepp's accessibility and follow-up with teachers, despite his prominence in community relations and educational leadership.
The district has seen four directors in the past 11 years, intensifying calls from community sections to stabilize leadership at the helm of the county's education system. According to his biography, some advocates for Stepp at the meeting drew on his history of educational achievement and managing to bring schools under his former purview to top academic performance levels. Stepp’s background includes roles as a band teacher and in various administrative positions, including principal and assistant principal.
Yet, detractors, such as board member Scott VanWinkle, highlighted issues like Stepp's proposed raise as a sticking point, suggesting fiscal concerns tied to Stepp's contract, considering the implications it would have on hiring additional much-needed teaching staff, as cited by WATE. Meanwhile, some parents and former staff have come forth with glowing accounts of Stepp's approachability and proactive nature. A petition has even been started by parents in an attempt to persuade the board to reverse their decision, signaling the controversial and emotional nature of this administrative shift.
The contract is set to expire on June 30, marking an end to Stepp’s brief tenure that began in 2022. Stepp's departure continues the recent trend of quick turnover within the district's leadership ranks, leaving Cumberland County Schools at yet another crossroads as they seek to find an educational director who can fulfill the district's varied expectations.
