The Dallas City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing the city's convention center district, approving more than $47 million in contracts for major renovations as part of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas (KBHCCD) Master Plan. In a recent report from the City of Dallas, the council has allocated substantial funds to Gensler and KAI Design for the overhaul of prominent city structures including the Dallas Memorial Auditorium and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL).
As outlined in the communications, the contract with Gensler, a global design firm, totals $25,137,244 million and involves architectural and engineering services for the reconstruction of Dallas Memorial Auditorium, also known as Arena - Component Three of the plan. They will be working with a team that boasts 40.59% Minority and Women’s Business Enterprise (M/WBE) participation, and the arena will become the future domicile of the WNBA Dallas Wings. Meanwhile, KAI Design has been granted a $22,261,116 million contract to revamp TBAAL, a cultural mainstay within the Dallas arts community for over 40 years, with a project management team led by Dikita Enterprises, Inc., and an impressive 74.74% MWBE involvement.
The refurbishment of these venues is part of the city’s broader strategy to entrench Dallas as a top-tier destination for conventions and economic growth. "The City Council continues to provide an unwavering commitment to realize the Convention Center district’s vision as a destination powering the Dallas economy,” said Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert, highlighting the dual benefit of these developments on both residents and visitors which is an integral aspect of these initiatives, per the City of Dallas.
