Dallas steps up to honor one of its most resilient figures, Holocaust survivor Max Glauben, with a street topper that'll bear his name. In collaboration with the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, city officials are gearing up for an unveiling ceremony set to take place at the museum located at 300 N. Houston Street.
The event, aligning with International Holocaust Remembrance Day, spotlights not just a local hero but a global inspiration. Max Glauben, who sadly passed in 2022, wore the harrowing badge of survival, making it through the Warsaw Ghetto, and several concentration camps including a death march, and was liberated by American forces. His commitment to sharing his harrowing experience to educate others on the incomprehensible horrors of the Holocaust and to combat hatred left an indelible mark, as per the City of Dallas.
"Max Glauben’s legacy of resilience, education, and unwavering dedication to fighting hatred has profoundly shaped our community and the world", Mary Pat Higgins, President and CEO of the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, remarked, as cited by the City of Dallas. It's clear that Glauben's relentless efforts resonated deeply, sparking reflection, and during his lifetime spurred action within the Dallas community and beyond.
His son Phil Glauben captured the essence of Max's journey, stating to the City of Dallas, "My father, Max Glauben, whose journey from unimaginable loss to a symbol of hope and education will continue to inspire us all—this street topper will serve as a lasting tribute to his mission of teaching the world that 'hate is a disease, and education is the cure.'" The tribute rests at the heart of District 11, represented by Councilmember Jaynie Schultz, who sees the symbol as a beacon for what's righteous in the country, holding up a mirror to our aspirations for humanity.
