As chill sweeps through Dallas, the city's Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) doubles down on its efforts to provide warmth for those without a hearth, maintaining operations of the Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TIWS) due to the continued frigid forecasts. The City of Dallas has announced that these temporary refuges will keep their doors open until the mercury stabilizes above the freezing mark, a move that underscores the government's adherence to the policies laid out in Chapter 45 of the City Code.
The TIWS, which was initially activated on Sunday has its embracive spans currently hosted at the Fair Park Grand Place, the Austin Street II locale, and the Tower Building within the precincts of Fair Park, their respective addresses listed as 3701 and 3809 Grand Ave., and 2929 Hickory St., are open to those in need between the early hours of 8 a.m. and the concerted closing of 10 p.m.
Sanctioned by the city, Austin Street Center is at the forefront as the external partner managing these facilities, enhancing the array of critical services provided during these extreme weather episodes.
Beyond the designated TIWS structures, the homeless population is reminded and encouraged to venture towards any of the city's standing overnight shelters for a safe respite from the biting cold. Moreover, transport to these havens can be requested through an emergency 911 call, should the need be pressing, this directive is accompanied by the availability of cold weather packs that can be procured from various recreational centers across Dallas or in bulk via direct communication with OHS at [email protected].
