Yesterday marked a somber anniversary for the Dallas Police Department as they remembered the tragic loss of Officer John Glenn Chase, who was killed in the line of duty 37 years ago. The department paid tribute to Officer Chase in a social media post, recounting the events that led to his untimely death on January 23, 1988.
Officer Chase, who was merely 25 years old at the time, was in the process of issuing a traffic ticket when his life was abruptly cut short. A homeless man approached, overpowered, and disarmed him. According to the post by the Dallas Police Department, as Officer Chase pleaded for his life, an unfathomable scene unfolded wherein a gathering crowd began to chant, "shoot him, shoot him." The assailant complied, mortally wounding Officer Chase with a shot to the head. The suspect then nonchalantly strolled down the street, gun in hand, before being stopped by the decisive action of two off-duty officers.
The fallen officer had served with the Dallas Police Department for two and a half years. The department's post remembers him as a dedicated member of their force. It extends condolences to his family, including his wife, parents, and brother, who have lived in his absence for over three decades now.
