The DeKalb County School Board is making strides towards sustainability, having approved the purchase of more than two dozen electric school buses with a price tag of $9.4 million—a sizeable investment aimed at reducing emissions and operating costs for the district. In a move reflective of the times the district's Executive Director of Transportation, Raymond Stanley, highlighted the broader implications by saying "The major purpose of this grant is to reduce the emissions, the fuel exhaust that we put out in our community," in an interview with FOX 5, framing this acquisition as a community-centric initiative, especially as the electric buses are to be deployed in some of DeKalb's most underserved zip codes. The grant securing Monday night’s decision was a part of the EPA’s Clean Bus Program under President Joe Biden’s sweeping bipartisan infrastructure law, which will see day-to-day operations transition from a diesel-dominated fleet.
Apart from the transportation advancements, DeKalb's future seems to be a stage for overhaul and spit shine, as the district also deliberates over a $7 million expenditure for new furniture, sourced from a range of suppliers, as reported by Decaturish. The proposed spend includes a boost to existing contracts and supplements to address backordered items affecting a significant number of schools and office spaces, emphasizing the sheer scale of the upgrade planned for the district's infrastructure.
