The Morningside Cafe, a local coffee shop in Detroit's Morningside neighborhood, grappled with a destructive act of vandalism last Friday when two individuals were caught on camera hurling a cinderblock at the establishment's windows. As reported by ClickOnDetroit, cafe owner Jeffrey Lewis II described the project as a passion project, something that was needed for the area. The incident resulted in significant damage, not only to the building but also to the morale of those invested in the community's revitalization efforts.
Lewis arrived on the morning of the crime to find the entire window was completely smashed and damaged. The cost of restitution for the ruined glass and fixtures is estimated to be in the thousands. The two suspects have yet to be apprehended, however, Lewis recognized one of the perpetrators as a previous patron who had asked for help, which he had provided. "It’s heartbreaking," Lewis told ClickOnDetroit about the realization. This sense of personal betrayal is compounded by the challenges Morningside Cafe has overcome, including a shooting targeted at Lewis earlier in the year and a fire two days before the grand opening.
The response from the Detroit community has been poignant, rallying around the cafe in the aftermath of the vandalism. A WXYZ report notes that regulars and new visitors alike have shown their support, with many coming to the cafe in solidarity. "All the love and the well wishes, you know, those who have come in and given me hugs and told me it’s going to be okay, it’s definitely been appreciated," Lewis told CBS News Detroit. A GoFundMe campaign was set up as well, raising a significant portion of the funds needed for repairs.
Despite these challenges, it is the indomitable spirit of both Lewis and the community that has kept Morningside Cafe's doors open. The business plays a meaningful role in the neighborhood by offering a communal space for conversation and connectivity, a rarity in Morningside before the cafe's inception. "I know the importance of this place and what it means to a lot of people," Lewis said told WXYZ. In the face of adversity, the community's embracement and the necessity of Morningside Cafe to the fabric of the neighborhood echoes the resilience and determination that is characteristic of Detroit's spirit.
