Three Detroit residents have been formally charged in connection with a brutal double homicide and kidnapping that occurred on New Year's Day in Northfield Township. The suspects, identified as Shuvonne Vinson, 42, Gregory Callhan, 37, and Keith Finley, 60, face multiple charges, including two counts of open murder and two counts of kidnapping. During her arraignment, Vinson unleashed a profanity-laden tirade, expressing no remorse for the actions that led to her arrest, as per CBS News Detroit.
In a similar account provided by ClickOnDetroit, prosecutors allege that the suspects, armed with guns, targeted the home of the Bernhards to retrieve Vinson’s daughter, who had been removed from her custody and was being fostered by the family. Following the incident, the children, aged 4 and 9, were taken but later found unharmed. The community has since come together to support the surviving family members, launching a fundraising campaign to cover expenses related to the tragedy.
The motive behind the crime was further clarified by The Detroit News, noting a custody dispute at the heart of the violent encounter. A pastor from the church that Jennifer Lyn Bernhard and her father, Stevie Ray Smith, attended, revealed that the Bernhards were indeed foster parents, nurturing both a biological and foster child, the latter being involved in the abduction. "Our church is very much hurting from the loss," Pastor Bradley Trask told The Detroit News, describing the overwhelming grief that has enveloped the community.
