Early Monday morning in Durham, a routine patrol turned into a pursuit after police located a vehicle reported stolen in a recent carjacking. Durham police officers spotted a silver 2011 Nissan Juke on Old Oxford Road at approximately 2:56 a.m., later confirming it as the car reported stolen on Meriwether Drive, ABC11 reports.
When the officers attempted to stop the car, the suspects drove off, leading police to Oxford Manor Apartments, where they abandoned the car on Wiggins Street and fled on foot. Despite the vehicle's occupants scattering, the ensuing chase was brief, and all five individuals, consisting of four male juveniles and one woman, were taken into custody shortly after seeking refuge in a home on Dearborn Drive, according to CBS 17.
The Durham Police Department handled the incident without any reported injuries and transported the group to their headquarters for questioning. In an effort to further their investigation, local authorities have reached out to the public for assistance. “The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released at the appropriate time,” the Durham Police Department stated in a news release. They encourage anyone with information about the carjacking to get in touch with Investigator Blake at 919-560-4440 ext. 29282, or to submit a tip through CrimeStoppers online or by calling (919) 683-1200, as per a press release covered by WRAL News.
