The residents of Edmond have shown strong support for the city's recycling program, with 92 percent of solid waste customers participating in the Edmond Recycles program throughout 2024. This high participation rate highlights the community's commitment to responsible waste management.
According to the City of Edmond, in 2024, Edmond's recyclers collectively diverted 5,221 tons of material from landfills by using their designated blue bins. Bobby Masterson, Assistant Director of Public Works, led the team that managed about 62,708 tons of solid waste in total. "Lowering the amount of waste that enters the landfill is the goal," Masterson said.
Additionally, the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) has partnered with the City of Edmond to create a new recycling collection center on campus. Located in Parking Lot 3 at 427 Chartrand Ave., the center is available for both the university community and the general public to drop off recyclables.
The City of Edmond provided five recycling containers for UCO’s use and will collect recyclables weekly. Acceptable items include glass, aluminum, plastics (numbers one and two), paper, and cardboard. Kelly Vaughn, Director of Facilities Administration at UCO, expressed appreciation for the arrangement, saying, "The City of Edmond has generously provided the recycling bins and weekly collection service at no cost to UCO or the community. We are very grateful for their support so we can continue to do our part to care for the environment"
With nearly 400 bins maintained across the UCO campus, the university's recycling efforts are now fully integrated into the city's recycling program, making it easier for the campus community to contribute to Edmond's sustainability goals.
